The best commercial parasols at The Farmer’s Dog, near Burford
After around two years of speculation regarding the so called “40k Jumbrellas” at The Farmer’s Dog Pub near Burford, I can finally clarify this mystery. We supplied our amazing Albatros Parasols. This journey was rewarding from start to finish, and we truly enjoyed collaborating with the excellent staff at the pub, especially Alan, who is just brilliant. However, we never had the chance to meet Mr. C.
Wind-Tested Parasols – The Myth and What Manufacturers Don’t Tell You.
You may have encountered claims about parasols being “wind tested” in specialized wind tunnels, often showcased with dramatic videos and headlines stating they can withstand certain wind speeds. While this sounds reassuring, there is more to the story than many manufacturers would like you to know.
Typically, the parasol chosen for testing is the smallest model in the range that the manufacturer believes will support their marketing claim. The test occurs in a controlled environment, with wind blowing from a single direction and at a consistent angle. The wind speed is gradually increased until a figure is reached that the manufacturer feels comfortable promoting. It’s also notable that these speeds are often quoted in kilometres per hour (kph) rather than miles per hour (mph), as the larger numbers can appear more impressive.
However, real-world weather does not behave like a wind tunnel. Wind changes direction constantly, swirls around buildings, funnels through gaps, strikes from unexpected angles, and can produce sudden gusts that are far more damaging than a steady breeze. A seemingly moderate 15 mph day can easily include gusts of 45 mph or more, and it is often these sudden gusts that cause damage.
The key point is this: no parasol manufacturer offers a warranty against damage caused by unexpected wind gusts. Despite impressive test figures, every parasol has its limits when faced with real-world weather conditions.
That is why we believe there is a better way to judge the strength and durability of a parasol. Rather than relying solely on laboratory wind-tunnel tests, consider real-world performance. Watch videos of parasols being used in genuine outdoor environments and see how they cope with changing conditions over time.
When it comes to protecting your investment, don’t base your purchasing decision on a wind-tunnel figure alone. Real-world performance is what truly matters.
